It is nice to see that another ‘Reading Room'(Vaasaka Saalai in Tamil)is now open to public. I called it a ‘Reading Room’ for a reason, when I was a little boy, my english teacher(a trained teacher, as he often calls himself), Mr T N Punjaksharam told me number of times “Thambi, there are no libraries in Neerverly, they are all Reading Rooms!” Reading Room is where people can go and read newsopapers etc.
Library(came from frech word “librairie”)or(Nool Nilayam in Tamil)is where an organized collection of information and resources made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. He was correct,we had no Libraries, the two which came very close to being Libraries (or were once libraries); one near Neervely South Sri Subramaniya Sana Samooka Nilayam(near Murugan temple and Paalar Nilayam) and the other was at Village Council(VC). These two had number ofinteresting english and tamil books and lent them to public, for a short period I should say. I was certainly one of those lucky ones who benefitted from those Reading Rooms. I hope we continue to develop these Reading Rooms and bring them back to their former glory!
Many thanks and well done to everyone who was involved in this worthwhile project.
